When There is a Hello, There Will Be a Goodbye Too.

it is done. finally it comes to the end. throughout this whole process in completing my third assignment in Issue and Publication Design, i have learned a lot and acquired some skills. well, obviously this blog was created for one of the requirement of this subject and first of all, i know how to create a blog. then, i learned that a blog should have a clear concept and content because it is a shared and linked to the internet so we should posted something carries useful information (Hubpages 2012). speaking of the design, my lecturer keep telling us to always make it simple and avoid putting rock music slow music is preferable (Lupetti 2010). thus, in order to attract my readers' attention the way i designed my blog reflect to the theory of composotion that consist of salience, framing (KVL 2006)

Clearly, my blog was designed with several framed sections like links, the heading that eventually will make my viewer easier to navigate my blog (Walsh 2006, p.29). another thing as KVL (2006, p. 19) and Walsh (2006, p.26) stated that the meaning of a text and images are based on own cultural background and experience thus in this blog i have chosen certain word and not using any vain images in order to elude the risk that my reader would get offended.

Shortly, i enjoyed this whole process of learning. big thanks to ms. Jenny and my classmates who are always there when i need help in completing this task. i hope you all who visiting my blog could gain an useful knowledge regarding on the basic information of publication and design! and last but not least,

Sex Appeal Does Selling.

It is a normal thing to see a girl posing normally and sometimes seductively inappropriate in an advertisement. Why is that so? According to Suggett (2012), putting sex appeal in an advertisement is specifically designed to arouse internet in a particular product, service, or brand. He added that throughout history, sex has been used as a selling tool. Sex refers to beautiful women (and increasingly, handsome men) that are used to attract the viewer. The question now, does sex appeal sell? Yes it is. Regardless of the sex appeals in magazine, a perfume advertisement also mostly using the sex appeals of women in order to attract their buyers.

Like for example, an issue that happened to an adult celebrity, Dakota Fanning that posing for Marc Jacobs perfume called Oh Lola!. According to Snead (2011) The Telegraph reports that this advertisement was inappropriately sexualized. They claims that the position of Dakota in the advertisement was sexually provocative. The ASA explained that although Dakota was 17 years old, but she looked under the age of 16 in the advertisement. Furthermore, they considered that the length of her dress, the color of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality.

According to Shitrit (2011), the message advertisers are really passing by is not just from a seductive pose, but also the support of the ideal body, perfect hair and the young age of the model. Another seductive perfume advertisement goes to Dolce & Gabbana 'Rose'. In this ad, Scarlett Johansson impersonating the icon of Marily Monroe and you can tell that she is showing the curves and her cleavage in this advertisement below.

To be concluded, sometimes it is a good in putting sex appeal to every advertisements in order to attract the public to buy the product. According to Crossis (2011), sex can be businesses best advertising took. Moreover, using an attractive spokesperson can bring the desired response from the buyer.

The Power of a Little Alteration.

Photojournalism is an area of photography dedicated to taking accurate shots of certain events (Photography 2012). this profession is really fun yet dangerous at the same time because it requires the worker to be in the exact location in order to capture a good shot of a particular event thus the workers will risks themselves if they are appointed to the war country. one of the examples, Issam Rimawi was hurt when he was appointed to shoot the weekly friday protests eent that was taken place in Nabi Saleh, Palestine. he was hit by a tear gas canister on the leg (WAFA 2011).

source: visualcultureblog.com

Like editors and writers, a photojournalist is held to a stand of ethics. a good example of photojournalism is it can engages the viewer to make them want to read more. one of the examples is the image that was taken in New York, the destruction of the WTC (World Trace Center on September 11th, 2011. the image that was originally taken by Lyle was a huge success because it ended up to be on the cover of TIME magazine (Owerko 2011).

source: goodmenproject.com

Presenting an accurate and real picture to the publication is crucial because one code of the ethic is to not altering pictures using any kind of computer software (re: photoshop, etc) as it is considered taboo and once, the publication know, the career would be destroyed (Bersak 2006). However, as there are some competitive in media outlet, hence there are some publications that purposely edit the images due to attract buyer. mostly is a magazine, tabloid that contain on celebrity news, etc like Metropolitan for instance (Testi 2006)

source: blogcritics.org

the photo clearly shown the difference between left and right, they would have edited the upper part bigger that definitely is going to appeal the readers especially for boys. to conclude, altering images in photojournalism is not bad as long as it is still under the sake of beneficial for the publication.

What Matter is Your Own.

Who can live without internet today? even kids in ages between 2 until 11 have embraced the internet as a part of their natural environment (Demmer 2011). speaking of internet, it is very important in our daily life right now as it is consist of bunch professional works that contain of useful information. Today, people especially university students are tend to use it as their alternative source in completing their tasks. According to Montecino (1996) copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws to the authors' original work, can be available to both published and unpublished form. thus, it is necessary for students to interpret a behavior of citing the author first after they took the ideas from one work. unfortunately, most of them misinterpret by claiming it as their own works which it close to stealing and this kind of act is called plagiarism.

source: google.com

Unfortunately, 60 % of university student in Malaysia conduct this behavior (Danian 2001) and the divergence of plagiarism have gone widely. Many people believe that anything in the Internet is public domain, they thought every information that is listed there has no copyright protection. For example, girl named irvina, she is a famous indonesian blogger. her posts talk about own experience yet eventually it teaches the reader some lesson. she created her own words for the sake of her blog thus, it is so obvious when people copy her work. there was a time one person copied her work and claimed that it was hers. the original author was mad obviously. this clearly shows how the reaction of all authors when they realized we have taken their ideas without even cite them.

In addition, it is necessary to cite and reference when you pick people's idea. to conclude, a quote by Carroll (Morgan and Hauck 2012) "being original does not mean having novel ideas before expressed by a human. it simply means doing the work by yourself." what matter is the hard work and a simple own work is more appreciated thus start to apply this term in your life.

The term Free Expression is Feasible in Media.

As a matter of fact, social media is a category of sites that is based on user participation and user generated content (Saper 2009). It basically means that it allows the user to post whatever they want freely however, there is one common trouble that journalists and public sphere may encounter when they are using media online platform.

There are several legal issue such as firstly public tend to use Facebook, twitter or other social networking media to discriminate against and harass fellow employees or even the employer. for instance this issue happened on November 3rd 2011, there was a girl who using Facebook to impersonate her ex-boyfriend and she was arrested then faced up to 18 months in prison due to injuring her ex-boyfriend reputation as a police officer (Gottlieb 2011). another public issue when students are allowed to express their anger about their lecturer through Facebook, Twitter, etc.

percentage of journalists that being arrested                                                                        number of journalist in prison since 1998
(source: cpj.org)

In addition, social media has significantly affected the way journalists are supposed to work. CPJ (2008) revealed the percentage of journalists that been arrested because for the sake of reporting and online journalists represents as the highest as it stated 45% which refers to online editors, web-based reporters and bloggers. according to Millar (2012), journalists are not allowed to express their personal opinion on social media because it could risk their job or themselves. for instance, Abdel Karim Suleiman an egyptian online journalist was one of 56 online journalists who has been arrested due to expressing his own opinion through blog because it considered insulting the president of Egyptian.

Abdel Karim Suleiman - source: google

As we can see, mostly the occurring of this issue is basically caused by lack of freedom in expressing opinion. Ijnet (2011) stated that free expression is essential because it reflects to a professional role of their profession. therefore, a lawyer as well an author called Peter Noorlander is now providing legal aid and help journalists defend their rights. he has been introduced the term of freedom of expression in various countries (Noorlander 2011)

Hence, the law of social media should have captured and understand that public especially journalists to be able to express their opinion therefore people who are new to these medium have their own privacy to express anything without potentially getting any terrible threats.

Distinguish Print and Screen Design.

Print design and screen design come in completely different aspect each. Screen design is well known to various websites on the web like blog for instance. According to Walsh (2006) screen documents have the potential to combine words and images in a complex structure. On the other hand, Print designs are more to 2 dimensional (Neilsen 1999) due to the layout. In addition, print design is more striking and intricate in terms of the design.

Screen Document (blog) - Source: Google

Print Document - Source: Google

Basically, according to Neilsen (1999) there are three considerations of differences on designing screen and print documents such as:

1. Main structure
Print document are 2 dimensional while screen documents are divided to 1 dimensional and N dimensional. also, screen documents are more attractive to the readers because it is more to scrolling experiences therefore it allows reader to scroll down/up for their needs of information.

2. Navigation
Turning the page is only navigation for print documents. on the other hand, screen documents come with hypertext navigation which, it mixed with information architectures, visualization thus it attract users impression more. Last but not least,

3. Response time, Resolution and ''Canvas'' Size
even though, users are more attracted to screen documents yet however, the response of screen document is much slower compared to the print design due to screen document need to wait for a page to fully load.
Regarding on the size, print document have a stable and fixed size (Hilligoss & Howard 2002).

in conclusion, as both screen and print design has its up and down side yet both still need to be well structured in terms of visualization in order to keep the reader attracted and entertained.

Deepening on New Media Publishing.

Internet has vastly altered the way we access bunch of information also in terms of way we communicate. According to Naughton (2006), the speed of development seems to be on the rise with the combination of personal computing, digital converge and global networking slides. The existence of new media trends for instance Blogs, Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Microblogs, online Journalism etc have become a major outbreak in the society nowadays.

V-blog
As a matter of fact, youtube is the largest video site on the web as it has almost more than 3 million visitors everyday (Clean Cut Media 2009). Nevertheless, many blogger uses this site to share video with another users by uploading variety of video. The popularity of youtube has altered communication in the media ecosystem now for instance, our very own prime minister Haji Abdul Razak who has his own Youtube channel in order to deliver messages.
In addition, Walsh (2006, p.30) has stated that Internet site have the ability to combine text into complex structures for operating. For instance, the microblogging services.

According to Nesbitt (2009) microblogging is the act of posting short messages to the web. Basically, a person uses microblogging to update on a current event. one example would be on the detik.com. a twitter account with the username of @detikcom is an indonesian twitter account which it was used as a warn of news event to all indonesian citizens on what is happening everyday

To be concluded, the emergence of new media trends has improved all the usage and ability in more convenient ways hence, all citizen in the society will get all updates easily.
